Fact 5 - The Discovery of Sport
As the cultures around the world evolve, they developed many customs to entertain and bond together as a community. They created sport. Dictionary.com defines "sport" as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature". The sport was loved by the community, and so are the world currently. We practiced many forms of sport such as football, swimming, soccer, basketball, etc. We did also create wrestling. In fact, it was the oldest sport, and it played an essential role in the past empires and shaped their culture.
Wrestling was the oldest sport since it's easy to be involved in and requires no equipment. Wrestling was found in many different places in the world but there is only one place that recorded the sport. According to Oldest.org, "Wrestling was first depicted by the people who lived near the Lascaux caves in France over 15,300 years ago" (8 Oldest Sports in the World). Lascaux cave contains many historic paintings that describe the life of the people during the Palaeolithic age, which is the Stone Age period. This tells that wrestling had been invented along with the dawn of humankind.
Wrestling was invented by the beginning of human for a very logical reasonings. It requires strength to take the opponent down. It requires muscle mastery and the ability to exploit the weak spots in the opponent. Because humans began to form clans to defend themselves from other clans, they need a strong group of men to withstand an offensive attack on them. They need to be physically strong and intelligent enough to exploit the weakness and physically attack it. Because physically strong was demanded, they use wrestling as a sport to practice their physical strength and as an entertainment in the community. This helps the clan bonds together as a strong group and eventually evolve into a strong empire with strong men.
Despite wrestling is widely considered as the oldest sport, some sports may
have been invented before wrestling. For instance, running was born in the same era as
wrestling. However, due to many reasons, running did not spread as widely as wrestling. One of the major reasons was running did not practically help humans to fight in combat; therefore, it did not practice by many communities until the world evolves.
Wrestling has helped mankind to be strong as time has proved. It developed strength of the very core of the community, a group of men. Wrestling exposes mankind to improvability. Therefore, it had been invented and adopted by many cultures. In the end, it is considered to be the oldest sport of all.
